Fault finding

A tripping RCD, a circuit that will not reset, lights that flicker or dim under load, sockets that have stopped working, a burning smell near a fitting. Fault finding is charged by time because it genuinely varies: sometimes it is a failed appliance flooding the circuit with earth leakage and takes twenty minutes, and sometimes it is buried cable damage and takes half a day. We will tell you what we have found and what the options are before doing more than diagnosing.

Do you need a rewire or a new consumer unit?

Older installations with rewireable fuses, no RCD protection or insufficient circuits often need a consumer unit replacement rather than a full rewire, which is a fraction of the cost and disruption. A genuine full rewire is a big job and it is worth being sure it is actually needed. We will give you a straight view, and if the honest answer is that a board change plus two new circuits solves your problem, that is what we will quote.

Additions and alterations

Extra sockets, outside sockets and lighting, kitchen and bathroom circuits, LED downlighting, extractor fans, EV chargers, garden and shed supplies. Notifiable work is certified and, where required, notified to Building Control on completion, so the paperwork exists when you come to sell or let.

EICR remedial work

If your Electrical Installation Condition Report has come back unsatisfactory, the remedial work is usually specific and limited: a bonding upgrade, an RCD, a handful of accessories, a rectified junction. We quote against the coded observations line by line so you can see exactly what is required to make the report satisfactory and what was only ever a C3 recommendation. You are welcome to have another contractor do the work; we will still explain what it involves.

What certificate do you get?

Work is certified appropriately (an Electrical Installation Certificate for a new installation or a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate for smaller alterations), and you get the paperwork, not just the invoice. That certificate is what a conveyancer, a lender or a local authority will eventually ask for.

Which mistakes do we see most often?

Accepting a rewire quote without asking which specific findings require it. Many older properties need a consumer unit, earthing and bonding upgrades and one or two circuits, a fraction of the cost and disruption. Also common is resetting a tripping RCD repeatedly without identifying the cause; the RCD is doing its job, and something on that circuit is leaking to earth.
