In short
Who do you call for an electrical emergency in Harrow?
For a fault inside your home, call an electrician: we attend across Harrow the same day in opening hours, Monday to Saturday, and take emergency calls on Sundays. If the whole street is dark, it is a network fault. Call 105 free, which reaches UK Power Networks, the operator for Harrow.
If there is smoke, fire or an injury, call 999 first. Then switch off at the consumer unit if you can reach it safely.
Everything else we do locally is under landlord certificates and repairs in Harrow, and the wider service is on our Electrician & Electrical Work page.

Also in Harrow: bathroom fitters and emergency plumber.
What you get
What a Harrow emergency visit includes
The fault found and made safe, a written record of what was isolated, and, for a licensed let, notes you can keep on your licence file.
- Isolating the faulty circuit, including on old rewireable fuse boards
- Testing where old red-and-black wiring meets newer brown-and-blue work
- Checking that the circuit for mains-wired smoke alarms is back on before we leave
- Like-for-like repairs on the day where the part is available
- A written findings note, with photographs, for landlords and agents
- A quote for the permanent fix where it needs a second visit
How it works
- Call with the address, the postcode and whether the street is in a controlled parking zone
- Tell us where the consumer unit is, especially in a converted house or a flat over a shop
- We arrive, isolate the fault and test the affected circuits
- We repair what is safe to repair on the day and restore the healthy circuits
- The findings go to you, or to the landlord or agent, the same day
Which wiring will we find in a Harrow house?
Usually wiring from several different decades, joined together. Harrow is an interwar borough: the Valuation Office Agency's figures for March 2025 show 51.8% of its homes were built between 1919 and 1939, against 22.4% across London. Many of those houses were wired in the 1930s, rewired at some point since, and then extended piecemeal as kitchens, loft rooms and rear extensions were added. That history shapes emergency calls. Electrical Safety First notes that black rubber-insulated cable was phased out in the 1960s, and lead or fabric-covered cable is older still. Where any survives in a ceiling void or under a floor, it can crumble when disturbed, which is why a fault often appears just after a carpet fitter or plumber has been working.
The red and black cores of fixed wiring installed before the colour change of 2004 to 2006 are not a fault on their own. The Wiring Regulations change was not retrospective. Where old and new colours meet, though, a warning notice should be fixed at the consumer unit, and the joints at that boundary are a common place for a fault to start.
What if your board still has rewireable fuses?
A blown rewireable fuse can be repaired, but only with fuse wire of the correct rating, and only once the fault that blew it has been found. Some older Harrow houses still have a board with pull-out fuse carriers. The real danger with these is a carrier rewired with heavier wire, or wrapped in foil, so that it stops blowing. A fuse that cannot blow will let a cable overheat instead. If a fuse has blown, leave the carrier out and the circuit off, and tell us what was running at the time.
We find the cause, repair the circuit and refit the fuse at the right rating. If the board itself is scorched, cracked or warm to the touch, we isolate it and quote for a replacement consumer unit rather than patching it. That is the one case where a board change is urgent rather than planned.
Where is the consumer unit in a converted house or a flat over a shop?
Find out before you need it, because in Harrow's converted houses it is often not in your flat. At the 2021 Census, 6.4% of Harrow households lived in part of a converted or shared house, and in Marlborough ward the figure was 26.5%. In those buildings a flat's board may sit in the communal hallway, under the stairs of the ground-floor flat, or in a meter cupboard by the front door. The landlord's supply for the stair lighting and the fire alarm has its own board.
Flats over shop parades on Station Road, Northolt Road and in Wealdstone are similar: the meter and board may be at the back of the shop or in a rear stairwell. Tenants and landlords should know which switch is theirs and have a key to the cupboard. When you call us, tell us where the board is and who holds the key. It can make the difference between a twenty-minute visit and an hour spent waiting for access.
What do Harrow licence conditions say about electrical emergencies?
Harrow's licence conditions require landlords to have arrangements in place for repairs and emergencies, and to tell occupiers what they are. The published selective licensing conditions require repairs to installations to be done by competent persons, and occupants to receive written confirmation of how repairs and emergencies are handled. The licence holder's name and contact number must be given to each occupier and displayed in the property. Harrow's HMO conditions (version 5, May 2020) go further. A notice in the house must include an emergency contact number. Tenants get at least 24 hours' notice of entry for emergency repairs. The electricity supply to fire detection and emergency lighting systems must not be cut off for unpaid bills.
Any urgent items on the electrical inspection report must be done within 28 days. Harrow adopted updated conditions in December 2025, so check the version on your own licence. Selective licensing now covers privately rented homes in six Harrow wards: Edgware and Roxeth from 2 May 2026, Greenhill and Marlborough from 6 July 2026, and Wealdstone North and Wealdstone South from 1 September 2026. If your let is in one of them, put our number on the emergency arrangements you give the tenants.
What changes when the fault is in a Harrow HMO?
In a house in multiple occupation, a single fault affects several households, and it can affect the fire alarm. Many HMOs have a mains-powered alarm system, and some have emergency lighting, supplied from their own circuit. If a fault takes that circuit down, the alarms usually fall back to battery, but only for a limited time. Tell us on the phone if the alarm panel is showing a fault or bleeping, so we bring the right parts and treat the visit as a priority.
We isolate only what we have to, keep the alarm circuit live where it is safe to, and check the panel shows normal before we leave. If an emergency repair changes anything the licence covers, such as alarm wiring, the written note we leave goes on your licence file.
How do we get to you, and where do we park?
Our office is at 6 Station Parade on Kenton Lane, so Harrow Weald, Wealdstone and Harrow town centre are close by, with North Harrow, South Harrow, West Harrow, Rayners Lane and Harrow on the Hill a little further. The usual delay is parking, not distance. If your street is in a controlled parking zone, a resident can book a Harrow visitor permit for our van.
Residents in a zone can buy up to 100 a year, each virtual permit lasts up to 24 hours, and the council gives a repair person as an example of a visitor. Have the vehicle registration ready when we call to confirm, and the permit can be live before we arrive.
What affects the cost of a Harrow emergency call?
Time on site, and what the house hides. A fault on a modern board with labelled circuits is quicker to trace than one on an unlabelled rewireable fuse board in a house rewired three times. Access matters here more than in most places: a locked meter cupboard in a converted house, or a board behind stock in a shop, adds time.
Parts for older boards can be hard to find, and some cannot be matched at all. In that case we make the circuit safe on the day and quote the board change separately.
Certificates and defined jobs are a fixed price confirmed before we attend; repairs are charged by the hour, with the rate and an estimate confirmed before we attend.
Harrow streets and neighbourhoods we cover
All of the London Borough of Harrow's HA1, HA2 and HA3 areas: Harrow town centre and Harrow on the Hill, Greenhill and Marlborough, Wealdstone and Harrow Weald, Headstone, North Harrow, West Harrow, South Harrow, Roxeth and Rayners Lane. Pre-1919 houses cluster around Pinner Road, Greenhill, West Harrow and Wealdstone, so expect older boards and mixed wiring there. North Harrow and Rayners Lane are almost entirely interwar, with long runs of 1930s semis. We also cover Kenton, Stanmore, Edgware and Pinner from the same office.
Nearby areas we cover: electrical work in Kenton, and in Pinner, Stanmore, Wembley and Northolt.
We also cover electrical work in Ruislip, and in Edgware.
When it is not our call
Council tenants should report faults to Harrow Council's housing repairs service, which has its own contractors. Housing association tenants should call their landlord. A power cut across the street, a damaged service cable or a problem at the meter belongs to UK Power Networks or your supplier, not to us. We do not offer an overnight service, and we do not repair boilers, although we can check the electrical supply to one.

Emergency electricians in Harrow: common questions
Not answered here? Call 0203 667 1333 and ask.
Who is the electricity network operator for Harrow?
UK Power Networks. Harrow is one of the local authorities in its licence area. Call 105 free for a power cut, a damaged cable in the street or a problem with the sealed fuse before your meter. For anything after the meter, from the consumer unit onwards, you need an electrician. Check the neighbours and the street lights first.
Do you come out on Sundays in Harrow?
On Sundays we take emergency calls only. Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to 4.30pm, emergencies across Harrow are attended the same day. We are not a 24-hour service. Outside those hours, isolate the circuit, leave it off, and call us when the lines open. Call 999 if there is smoke, fire or an injury.
Is red and black wiring in my Harrow house dangerous?
Not on its own. Red and black cores mean the fixed wiring was installed before the colour change of 2004 to 2006, which did not require existing wiring to be replaced. What matters is the condition of the cable and its insulation, which an inspection tests. Where old and new colours meet, a warning notice should be fixed at the consumer unit.
My Harrow tenant says the power keeps going off. What should I do?
Ask which switch trips and when, and whether the neighbours are affected. If it is the street, it is UK Power Networks. If it is the consumer unit, book us with the tenant's number, and give at least 24 hours' notice of entry if your HMO licence requires it, unless the tenant agrees to sooner access. We send you the findings and photographs once the fault is found.
Can you replace a blown rewireable fuse?
Yes, with fuse wire or a carrier of the correct rating, once we have found what blew it. Do not rewire it with thicker wire or foil to stop it blowing. That removes the protection for the cable. If the old board is damaged or overheating, we isolate it and quote for a new consumer unit.
Does a Harrow HMO need an emergency contact number on display?
Harrow's HMO conditions (version 5, May 2020) require a notice in the house with the manager's name, address and phone number, including an emergency contact number. The selective licensing conditions also require the licence holder's contact details to be given to each occupier and displayed in the property. Check the conditions on your own licence.
Do you need parking for an emergency visit in Harrow?
We need somewhere to put the van near the door, because the tools and test equipment are in it. In a controlled parking zone, a resident can book a Harrow visitor permit, valid for up to 24 hours, using our registration. Tell us when you call and we will give you the registration straight away.
