Whether materials need matching. Standard doors and merchant-profile skirting are quick. Matching a period moulding, scribing to out-of-square walls or building fitted storage into an alcove is slower and priced as a defined job.

Doors
Hanging new internal and external doors, easing and adjusting doors that catch or drop, replacing hinges, locks, latches and handles, fitting fire doors with the correct intumescent strips and closers where required, and rehanging doors that have been fitted the wrong way round by someone in a hurry.
Skirtings, architraves and mouldings
Replacing and matching existing profiles, which on period property often means having a profile made rather than accepting the nearest thing from a merchant. Scribing to uneven walls and floors so there are no gaps for the caulk to hide.
Flooring
Laminate, engineered and solid timber, plus levelling and underlay preparation, thresholds and beading. Also lifting and relaying boards for access to pipework and cabling, and repairing squeaks and movement in existing floors.
Fitted storage and second fix
Alcove shelving, understairs storage, wardrobes and cupboards, loft hatches and ladders, boxing in pipework, kitchen worktop and unit adjustments, and the general second-fix joinery that follows plumbing and electrical work.
Staircases and structural repairs
Creaking treads, loose balustrades, replacing spindles and newel caps, and repairing damaged strings. Where a repair turns out to be structural rather than cosmetic we will tell you, and we will tell you when it needs a structural engineer rather than a carpenter.

Which mistakes do we see most often?
Accepting the nearest merchant profile for skirting and architrave in a period property. It is visibly wrong once it is on the wall, and having a run machined to match costs less than most people expect. The other is fitting a fire door as though it were an ordinary door: the seals, hinges, gaps and closer are what make the assembly perform, not the leaf on its own.

Can you match old skirting and architrave profiles?
Usually. On period property the nearest merchant profile is often visibly wrong, in which case having a run machined to match is the better answer. We will show you both options and the cost difference.
Do you fit fire doors?
Yes, with the correct intumescent seals, hinges and closers. Fire doors only perform as certified if the whole assembly is right, so it matters that the frame, seals and gaps are correct, not just the door leaf.
My floor creaks. Can it be fixed?
Usually, and usually without replacing it. Creaks are typically movement between boards and joists or at a nail fixing, and can often be resolved by re-fixing from above. We will diagnose before quoting.
Do you build fitted wardrobes and alcove shelving?
Yes. Built in situ and painted to match, which for alcoves and awkward spaces gives a better fit than any flat-pack unit.
How is carpentry priced?

Can you lay a wooden or laminate floor in a flat?
Yes, but check your lease first. Many flat leases restrict hard flooring or require acoustic underlay so that noise does not carry to the flat below, and some need the freeholder's consent. Send us the relevant clause and we will specify the underlay and floor to suit it.
Can you fix a door that sticks or will not latch?
Usually, and usually without replacing it. A door that catches has typically dropped on its hinges or swollen, and a latch that will not engage is often a strike plate that no longer lines up. We diagnose it first and tell you whether easing, rehanging or replacing is the honest answer.
