In short
Looking for a carpenter in Ruislip?
Yes. Our carpenter covers all of HA4 for doors, floors, skirting, staircases and made-to-measure storage. Hanging a set of doors or building an alcove unit is priced as one figure in advance. Smaller repairs run on an hourly rate that we tell you, with an estimate, before the visit. The carpenter comes from Kenton Lane, about six miles by road via Eastcote.
The full guide is on our Carpentry & Joinery page, and everything else we do locally is under landlord certificates and repairs in Ruislip.
Carpentry & Joinery in Ruislip: what is different here
Original joinery in interwar Ruislip
Many Ruislip houses built between the wars still have some of their original joinery: panelled internal doors, moulded skirting and architrave, picture rails, timber staircases with square spindles, and front doors with glazed panels. Merchant profiles rarely match these. Where a run of skirting or architrave has been damaged, we can have a matching profile made, so the repair disappears once painted. Old doors that bind usually need planing and rehanging on new hinges, not replacement.
Fire doors for shared houses under Hillingdon's licence
Hillingdon's borough-wide additional HMO licence, in force from 24 August 2026, has pushed many Ruislip landlords to bring escape routes in shared houses up to standard. A fire door only performs as an assembly: the right leaf in a suitable frame, intumescent strips and smoke seals, fire-rated hinges, correct gaps and a working closer.
We fit and adjust doors to that standard, and we tell you if an existing door is not certified and cannot be upgraded. Which doors need this is set out in the licence and the fire risk assessment for the house.
Front doors and windows in the conservation areas
In Ruislip Village and Ruislip Manor Way conservation areas, the front of a house is part of what the designation protects. We checked Hillingdon's list of Article 4 directions in October 2026: it lists five, covering HMOs, some changes of use, employment land and large rear extensions, and none of them removes rights over windows or doors in Ruislip.
Houses in conservation areas do still lose some permitted development rights, flats have no householder rights at all, and listed buildings need consent. Repairing an existing front door or bay window like for like avoids all of that, so that is where we start.
Floors in Ruislip's houses
Interwar houses mostly have suspended timber ground floors. Squeaks usually come from loose boards over joists, and a soft patch near a bath or kitchen sink is often a sign of an old leak. We refix, replace damaged boards, and lay laminate, engineered or solid timber over a properly prepared base. If we lift a board and find rot or a joist problem beyond a simple repair, we stop and tell you, because it may need a surveyor rather than a carpenter.
Fitted storage around bays, alcoves and stairs
The chimney breast alcoves, understairs cupboards and bay recesses of a 1930s semi are almost never square, which is why flat-pack furniture never sits right in them. We measure and build alcove shelving, wardrobes and understairs storage to the actual walls, scribed to the uneven plaster, ready for decorating.
Manor Way and the early garden-suburb houses
Ruislip Manor Ltd put in Manor Way and Park Way just before the First World War, on the lines of the Soutar plan, and are among the oldest planned streets in the area. The joinery on those early houses is a generation older than the 1930s semis around them: different door patterns, different skirting heights, and in places original casement windows.
Matching profiles there takes more care, and in a conservation area a repair that keeps the original pattern is what the council expects to see. We measure and photograph first, then quote the repair.
Loft hatches, boarding and understairs cupboards
Many HA4 houses have small, uninsulated loft hatches that never close tightly and let warm air into the loft. We can fit a larger insulated hatch with a draught seal, and a loft ladder where there is room. Boarding a loft for storage is straightforward if it is laid over the existing joists without overloading them and without squashing the insulation, and we tell you when that is not possible in your house.
Understairs cupboards are a common place for meters, so any storage we build there leaves clear access to them.

Carpentry & Joinery in Ruislip: your questions
Not answered here? Call 0203 667 1333 and ask.
Can you match the skirting in my 1930s Ruislip house?
Usually, yes. If no stock profile matches, we can have a run machined to match a sample, which costs less than most people expect and looks right once painted.
Do I need planning permission to replace my front door in Ruislip?
Not usually for a house, even in a conservation area, if no Article 4 direction applies, and we found none covering doors or windows in Ruislip as of October 2026. Flats and listed buildings are different. Repairing the existing door avoids the question entirely.
What does a fire door in a Ruislip HMO need?
A certified leaf and frame, intumescent strips and smoke seals, fire-rated hinges, correct gaps and a self-closer that shuts the door fully. Check your Hillingdon licence conditions and fire risk assessment for which doors need it.
Why does my internal door stick in winter?
Timber swells with moisture and houses move. In an older Ruislip house a sticking door usually needs easing on the leading edge and its hinges tightened or packed, not replacing.
Can you fix a creaking staircase?
Usually from underneath, by refixing treads and risers and adding glue blocks, if the underside can be reached. Loose spindles and handrails are also common, and fixed in the same visit.
Will you take on structural timber work?
No. If a joist, a beam or a load-bearing wall is involved, we flag it and recommend a structural engineer. We do not hide it under new boards.
Can you repair timber bay windows on a Ruislip semi?
Often, yes. Rotten sills and the bottom of frames can be cut out and spliced with new timber, then primed and painted, which keeps the original bay. Where the frame is too far gone, we tell you, and in a conservation area check with Hillingdon before replacing it.
