In short
Do you decorate houses and flats in Bushey?
Yes. EliteShires Property Services decorates Bushey houses, flats and shared houses, inside and out at ground and first-floor level. Every job gets a written specification and a price before we start, and an empty two-bedroom let is usually turned round in two to four days, with every room photographed before and after.
The full guide is on our Painting & Decorating page, and everything else we do locally is under landlord certificates and repairs in Bushey.
Painting & Decorating in Bushey: what is different here
The Bushey address where even the paint colour is controlled
Most of Bushey can be repainted outside without asking anyone. The exception is the Reveley Almshouses on Park Road and Herkomer Road. In 1994 Hertsmere made an Article 4 direction for numbers 1 to 10, approved by the Secretary of State in January 1995, which took away permitted development rights including the exterior painting class. The approval letter describes the almshouses as a significant feature of the Victorian streetscape in the Bushey High Street conservation area, in Bushey Village.
Hertsmere's conservation guidance also warns that where an Article 4 direction applies, painting the front of a house can need permission. If your house is in a Bushey conservation area and you plan a colour change, check first.
Warren estate exteriors: white frames and oak doors
The Warren estate in Bushey Heath was built to a consistent design from about 1956, and Hertsmere's 2003 design guide records its details: white Crittall metal windows in timber surrounds, solid oak front doors with glass bricks beside them, flat-topped open porches on slender timber posts, and ground-floor windows resting on scalloped timber brackets. Repainting the timberwork in its existing colour keeps those details intact. We prepare metal frames properly, treating rust spots before priming, and we will not paint over an original oak door, which the guide wants retained as it is.
Hallways in Bushey HMOs
In a shared house the hallway and stairs are the escape route, and Hertfordshire's HMO fire guide sets rules for them. The walls and ceilings should be free of flammable finishes such as polystyrene ceiling tiles and heavy flock wallpaper, so we strip those rather than paint over them. Fire doors are fitted with smoke seals that must not be painted, because paint stiffens them, so we mask seals and intumescent strips before painting doors and frames and check each door still closes into its frame afterwards.
Hertsmere has 12 licensed HMOs on Bushey addresses, and the same guidance applies to smaller shared houses too.
Turning round a Bushey void
Most two-bedroom voids here need two to four days: filling and sanding, a mist coat on fresh plaster, then two coats for walls and ceilings and a hard-wearing finish on woodwork. Kitchens and bathrooms get a moisture-resistant paint. If black mould keeps coming back on a ceiling, it points to a ventilation or damp problem, which we can flag but do not investigate, and Hertsmere's draft HMO standards require extractor fans in bathrooms linked to the light with an overrun or fitted with a humidistat.
The same standards expect anything the last occupants left behind to be cleared before the next tenancy, and we can tell you what is still there when we arrive.
Repainting a long-owned Bushey house for sale
Most Bushey homes are owner-occupied: 78.3% in Bushey Park, a ward crossed by Little Bushey Lane and part of Merry Hill Road. In Bushey Heath ward, home to Hartsbourne Avenue, 43.1% of households owned outright in 2021. Many of the decorating jobs we are asked about come before a sale: hallways, landings and woodwork that have not been touched in years, with heavy paint build-up on doors and skirting.
We tell you which rooms will make a difference to a buyer, and which can be left.
Working above the High Street and High Road shops
Flats above the parades bring practical limits. Daytime parking on Bushey High Street and Bushey Heath High Road is restricted to one hour from Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 6.30pm, and decorating materials need unloading. Tell us about rear access before the first day, and whether the shop below needs dust and noise kept to particular hours.

Painting & Decorating in Bushey: your questions
Not answered here? Call 0203 667 1333 and ask.
Do I need permission to repaint the front of my house in Bushey?
Usually not. Exterior painting is normally permitted, even in a conservation area, unless an Article 4 direction covers it, as one does at the Reveley Almshouses on Park Road. If you are unsure, ask Hertsmere's conservation team before a colour change.
Can you repaint the Crittall windows on my Warren estate house?
Yes. We clean back, treat rust, prime and repaint the steel and the timber surrounds. Hertsmere's design guide prefers white frames, so keep to white unless the council agrees otherwise.
How long to decorate a two-bed flat on Bushey Heath between tenants?
Allow two to four days, set by the state of the walls and the amount of woodwork. If tiling or carpentry is also needed, we sequence it so the flat is finished in one block.
My HMO's fire doors have smoke seals. Will you paint them?
We paint the doors and frames but never the seals or intumescent strips, which Hertfordshire's fire guide says must not be painted over. We mask them, and if a seal is already painted or damaged, we point it out for a like-for-like replacement.
Can I put wallpaper in the hallway of my Bushey house share?
A standard paper is fine. Heavy flock wallpaper and polystyrene ceiling tiles should not be used on the escape route of an HMO under the Hertfordshire fire guide, so we remove them if they are there.
Do you paint the scalloped brackets under Warren estate windows?
Yes. Hertsmere's design guide counts them among the estate's defining details, so we cut out any rot, prime bare timber and repaint in the existing colour rather than replace them with a different profile.
Can you decorate a flat above a shop on Bushey High Street?
Yes. The one-hour daytime parking limit means we plan unloading and parking in advance, so tell us about rear access, and any hours when the shop below needs quiet.
